Summer, Sky And A Flower

It’s summertime, and our thoughts invariably turn to long, lazy afternoons spent in the sun, followed by balmy evenings sipping wine around the barbeque.

Whether you have a diminutive back yard or an enormous garden, choosing the right type of outdoor lighting is really important, so it’s always good to know your options.

LED (Light-emitting diode) Lights really are the only option to choose, if you’re looking for illumination that’s reliable, long-lasting and super energy-efficient, that is.

And they’re available in such a huge variety, so you’ll be literally spoilt for choice!

LED Wall Lights

For general garden and outdoor illumination that’ll add a touch of elegance and flair, you’ll definitely want to check out the selection of LED wall lights that’s on offer.

They’re available in a wide variety of styles, ranging from the traditional in the shape of LED Wall Lanterns, to the modern like the Mellor Outdoor Downlight in black, so everybody’s taste will be catered for.

These wall lights will require an LED light bulb, so it’s very important you choose the right base for your fitting. One of the most prevalent bulbs for this type of light is the bestselling GU10 LED, however, certain models are G9 or E27-compatible fittings.

One thing that all these LED bulbs and lights in general have in common is their extreme longevity, especially in comparison with traditional sources of illumination like incandescent and fluorescent bulbs. Yes, you’ll be able to install them and simply forget about changing the bulb for at least 17 years, and that’s if you use them for 8 hours a day, every single day of the year!

With Ingress Protection Ratings ranging from IP44 to IP54, they’ll be more than adequately protected against solid objects of 1mm or more, as well as from splashing water, which makes them ideal for use in your garden or on your patio.

LED Decking Lights

To add a touch of sparkle to an outside area fitted with decking, there’s also a massive range of LED decking lights to choose from.

In 15mm and 40mm sizes, you’ll be able to decide exactly how much power you use, depending upon the magnitude of the light you require.

Obviously, the 40mm will be bigger, bolder and brighter, but you may decide that the cost of the electricity is a moot point once you realise how little of it both types use. The more power-thirsty of the two, yet requiring just 3.5 watts of electricity, the 40mm variety will cost you a miniscule £1.41, and that’s if you run them for 8 hours every day for a whole year based on a price of 13.75 pence per kW/h (Kilowatts per hour).

They’ll give off a gorgeous luminance, enhancing the ambience of your space in a choice of colours including red, blue, green and pink as well as warm white (3000K) and cool white (6000K) colour temperatures.

LED Floodlights

For the security-conscious, and for all manner of generalised outdoor lighting, there’s no better option than LED floodlights. Available in a choice of standard, motion-sensor and RGB, these all-in-one units encompass the entire range of amazing features of the other types of outdoor LED lighting, plus they’re incredibly robust, requiring very little or no maintenance throughout their long lives.

Being a complete fitting, they’ll never need a bulb changing, which an especial bonus, give that floodlights are usually positioned in quite out-of-the-way locations.

Great for home security, the models with an in-built motion sensor will come on only when they detect movement, which will save you money not only on electricity, but also on your home insurance premiums, whilst simultaneously acting as a deterrent to would-be burglars as well.

The RGB (Red, Green, Blue) floodlights will provide excellent general outdoor lighting, doubling up as party lights for those special occasions. This type of LED floodlight comes complete with its own, designated Radio-Frequency controller which will enable you to decide on the speed, mode and lumens of brightness to generate a spectacular array of colour-changing light.
