outdoor light

So, you’ve renovated your entire home, adding up-to-date, energy-saving LED Lighting throughout.  But now it’s time to roll up your sleeves once again, because the outside needs sorting out too!

Well, that’s absolutely no problem, as there’s a massive variety from which to choose.

The type of Outdoor LED Lighting you choose will be dependent upon your application, so here are just a few ideas.

LED Floodlighting

LED floodlighting is excellent for both general outdoor illumination and for home security, especially given the fact that burglaries in the UK are up from 651,000 in 2010 to 701,000 in 2012.

At number one on The Independent newspaper’s top 10 items for home security, LED floodlights, especially those with PIR (passive infra-red) motion sensors, will send out a dazzling glare whenever they’re activated by movement, anywhere within 10 metres of your home.

They’re great for people with shaded doorways, or if your garden is surrounded by the trees or high bushes which burglars love so much. Installing good quality LED floodlights can also help you to achieve significant reductions to your home insurance premiums.

Also superb for general lighting, LED floodlights will enable to tailor the ambience of your outdoor area as they’re available in a choice of two colour temperatures.

This isn’t just a feature of LED floodlights though, as the vast majority of LED lights and bulbs also boast cool white (6000K) or warm white (3000K) options.

To some spice to those balmy summer evenings, or if you’re having a garden party, there are also a variety of RGB (red, green, blue) LED Floodlights, all of which come complete with a designated RF (radio-frequency) remote controller, which will enable you to create a fantastic colour-changing lighting display.

LED Wall Lights

To give your outdoor area a touch of pizzazz, you’ll want to check out the huge range of LED Wall Lights that’s on offer.  Available in a wide variety of styles and finishes, they’re well equipped for outdoor use thanks to their IP44 ingress protection rating, which ensures that they won’t be affected either by solid objects larger than 1mm or by water splashing from any direction.

Those such as the attractive Darlington Wall Light are compatible with the ever-popular LED GU10 Bulb fitting, which won’t just make them shine brightly, they’ll also save you a considerable amount of money too.

Indeed, bulbs such as the GU10 LED Bulb 80 SMD require just a tiny fraction of the energy of their traditional incandescent counterparts to produce the same number of lumens.  This can equate to some massive savings, as the following illustration shows:

If you were to replace 5 x 50 watt incandescent bulbs with 5 x 3.3 watt GU10 LED bulbs, assuming an electricity cost of 10.63 pence per kW/h (price correct at time of writing) for 8 hours a day for one year –

  • 5 x 50W Incandescent Bulbs use 730.00 kW/h and will cost £77.60 to run.
  • 5 x 3.3W GU10 LED Bulbs use 48.18 kW/h and will cost £5.12 to run.

Thus, by replacing just 5 x traditional bulbs with energy-efficient LEDs, you stand to save £72.48 over the course of a year!

LED Decking Lights

Available in many vibrant colours, including red, green, pink and blue, as well as the two types of white mentioned earlier, LED Decking Lights will be the perfect source of illumination for your garden decking area.

They come in two sizes: a 15mm and a 40mm, so you’ll choose either according to the level of light intensity you require, or the size of your installation.

Ideal lights for underfoot, they illustrate wonderfully one of the qualities for which LED lighting is becoming famous, in that it produces very little heat when switched on.  Just imagine walking barefoot on a deck that was illuminated using incandescent lights; it would be more like a fire-walk!

Heat in light bulbs is a wasteful by-product that serves no purpose other than to seriously reduce their life-expectancy. Due to the fact that LEDs generate hardly any uneconomical heat, you can expect them to achieve a lifespan that’s well in excess of 50,000 hours, meaning they’ll still be glowing brightly some 17 years from the day you install them.

This is substantially longer than both types of traditional light source, and just one of the many reasons for their ever-growing popularity.
