Beautifully breath-taking, Japan’s wildest light display is famed for using millions of LED light bulbs to depict astonishing scenes of nature from not only Japan, but around the world.

The illuminations which Nabana no Sato have been creating for 14 years consists of two large tunnels which visitors are guided through. The older of the two tunnels (Kawazu Sakura) uses pink bulbs to mimic the growth of cherry blossoms through the tunnel whereas the newer tunnel is strung with 1.2 million bulbs shaped like flowers.

By many visitors, the light tunnels are considered to be the highlight of the six month event.

Each and every year, Nabana no Sato draws crowds of people from all over the country and potentially the world for its Winter illuminations, which take place from mid-October to early-May.

The park will also select a specific theme for its light show that was different from the last, e.g. for their 2018 how they’re celebrating Kumamoto.  This is aiming to promote Kumamoto as a tourist destination as the industry suffered after an earthquake shook the prefecture in April 2016.

The earthquakes destroyed the majority of the significant sightseeing areas such as Kumamoto Castle which is still under reconstruction.

Yasuyo Otani, Nagashima Resort’s spokesperson said “This year's illumination theme was decided with a strong desire to cooperate with Kumamoto's reconstruction through promoting Kumamoto by illumination." The resort has also placed donation boxes around the site in hope that people will generously help.

Otani goes on the say “We’ve been showing the beauty of nature throughout the world”

“We’ve introduced Mount Fuji, the Swiss Alps, Northern Europe’s Aurora shows- just to name a few. Our main theme of this year is ’Kumamon’s hometown dream is Kumamoto.’”

After some research on the Nabana no Sato Winter Illumination, it doesn’t surprise me that the festival draws in an estimated two million visitors each year. The park is festooned with endless amounts of lights which include illuminated fields of flowers, and animated show and a large tunnel of lights which tourists can walk through.
