LED skin therapy, probably seen first on Instagram posts by the likes of Jessica Alba and half of the Kardashian’s is the latest skin-care breakthrough, and we can understand why…

In the 80’s, NASA used LEDs in plant growth experiments on board the Space Shuttle. Now, the technology has recently found its way into the zeitgeist as a successful skin treatment from severe acne to fine lines and dullness.

There’s been a lot of confusion as to how a futuristic-looking mask that shines LEDs on your face can be such an effective method for skin therapy- so why not listen to a professional?

Dr. Annie Chiu, a dermatologist based in Los Angeles, says “When used consistently, over time, LED lights are thought to penetrate your skin at different depths and cause various reactions in your skin, such as fighting acne-causing bacteria, plumping skin and reducing wrinkles.”

Blue light is known to kill bacteria that causes acne whereas red stimulates collagen production and helps speed skin’s natural healing process.  White light, which is often only found in in-office treatments, is known to penetrate the deepest which tightens and reduces inflammation.

Joanna Vargas who owns two beauty meccas, one in New York and one in Los Angeles, explains “It works for acne, acne scars, building collagen and making the skin healthier in general. However, it’s also handy when we do peels in the office because it calms inflammation and makes the skin look perfect quickly”.

The lack of consumer knowledge meant that LED skin treatments took longer than it should have for it to go mainstream- now people are willing to pay top dollar for the treatment they have seen celebrities use. Vargas’ treatments that involve LEDs range from $150-$225 in price for sessions as short as 20 minutes.

Vargas’ most expensive treatment, called the ‘Vitalight treatment’ involves an hour of exfoliation, LED light therapy and oxygen. Though there are known to be many home devices on the market, they aren’t as powerful as ones used by doctors and are more susceptible to user error.
