What Does IP Rating Mean?

IP Rating stands for Ingress Protection and shows you how protected an electrical appliance is against water and other foreign objects. It is always formatted as IPXX, and the higher the digits shows better protection levels.

The first number indicates how well guarded the object is against foreign objects including dust. It is rated on a scale of 0-6.

The second number then shows the protection against water. The scale runs from 0-8 and each has its unique level of shielding from sprays of water to full submersion.
