What Are IP Ratings?

Anything that is designed for use outdoors will more than likely come with an IP rating – as is the case with our featured Thornton Aluminium IP54 Brick Light.

As the name implies, this particular product comes with an IP54 rating. But what does this mean exactly?

Well, IP ratings (short for Ingress Protection) are broken down into 2 parts, and are designed to give you a better understanding of how well protected a device is against foreign objects and moisture.

The 2 numbered digits tell you the level of protection, with the first digit referring to foreign objects, and the second digit referring to moisture.

The tables below indicates what each number means.

Let’s now apply this to our featured brick light, which has an IP protection rating of IP54.

The 5 tells us that it has limited protection against dust, but not total, and the 4 indicates that it can withstand splashes of water from any direction.

In the real world, this means that it’s safe to use outdoors and that the internal components are protected against foreign bodies.

Why Use LED Lighting?

There are loads of reasons why you should start using LEDs and ditch your old halogens. Chief among these reasons is the amount of money they can save you.

No one dislikes saving money right?

To start with, they cost you considerably less to run thanks to much lower energy consumptions. How do they do this? Through much better efficiency.

You see, when an LED light is switched on, it converts a massive 90% of its energy into visible light. Switch an older halogen on though, and only 20% of its energy is converted into light – which is its primary purpose.

The remaining 80% is lost to heat wastage, which incidentally is why halogens get so hot when they’ve been in operation for a while, giving LEDs an important safety advantage too.

This means that LEDs require much less energy – up to 90% less – to reach the same brightness as an equivalent halogen.

A knock on effect of this is less wear and tear on the internal components due to less heat. As a result, LEDs have much longer lifespans – twice as long as CFLs and 20 times longer than halogens!

To start with, you’re covered by our 28 day returns period, during which you’re fully entitled to a refund or exchange if you’re happy with anything.

You should know however that this brick light is a special order item, and isn’t kept in stock. This means that delivery will take an additional 3-5 days, and in the event of a return there will be a 15% restocking fee applied.

Because of this, please ensure that your basket is correct before placing your order.
