Reflective Flow: The World's Largest Chandelier Uses Colour Changing LED Lights

Say hello to the world’s largest chandelier – stunning, isn’t she?

Reflective Flow is a chandelier located in Doha, Qatar suspended in a glass atrium between 2 office complexes.

Its spectacular looks are the result of 2,300 hand ground optical crystals, and 55,000 colour changing LED lights coming together, in a 38.5m long chandelier weighing an incredible 19,900kg – that’s nearly 20 tonnes!

The snake-like construction was the work of Scottish designer and artist Beau McClellan, who specialises in domestic and commercial interactive lighting solutions. The project was commissioned by Al Hitmi or Ali Bin Khalifa Al Hitmi & Co property development.

From inception to completion, the entire thing took 2 years to make. Assembling all the component parts however, took just 1 month – with a team of 5 people from Unusual Rigging and Engineering, with a further 6 people from Beau McClellan Design.

Whilst it’s in the Guinness Book of Records for being the world’s largest chandelier, it’s also the largest interactive LED light sculpture too.

The crystals are shrouded on both sides by pieces of concave glass, covered by a reflective coating – while the entire system is operated by a state of the art control system.

By day, it exists as a grand art sculpture that captures the eye, but at night is where the whole thing comes to life. Each LED is individually addressable, capable of altering the brightness and the colour – resulting in an incredibly dynamic light piece.
